Antique 6ft Art Deco Anglo-Indian Colonial Raj Super King Four Poster Bed (Circa 1920). This is a fine quality antique 6ft wide Art Deco Anglo-Indian Colonial Raj four-poster bed, circa 1920, finished in a black ebony colour, which fits a standard UK super king size mattress (6ft wide x 6ft 6 long), in excellent original condition.

Mattress size: UK Super king (6ft wide x 6ft 6 long). Wood: Sissoo wood (a member of the Rosewood family). Ebony style original polish finish.

Open fretwork shaped canopy supports. Open fan design to head & footboard. Floral shaped headboard rail with central urn. Designed to be freestanding in centre of room. Dismantles for easy transportation and access.

Boasts a single tier structure with a central carved floral urn (a sign of good quality), flanked by fan shaped open spindles to the arched head and footboard with arched corner posts. Alongside the outer perimeter frame of the bed, the headboard, footboard, feature moulded side rails.

The bed boasts carved elegant acanthus leaf carved legs, which terminate on pad feet. Above the bed frame, two central open fretwork sections support a drop-down canopy. The superstructure lends itself to be dressed with romantic muslin drapes.

Please note, the bed can be used without the raised supports and canopy i. Not as a four-poster bed.

This bed will fit a standard UK super king size mattress (6ft wide by 6ft 6 long). The bed was designed to be freestanding in the centre of a room; this is why the back of the headboard is also carved and features a mirror match design so that the bed can stand in either direction. This bed has a dark ebony style colour and retains the original satin polish finish. The bed is constructed of sissoo wood (a member of the Rosewood family) and has a superior structure. This bed would look stunning in either a contemporary or traditional setting.

The style of these beds dates from 1840 until 1947 (until Indian Independence). The beds were constructed for the British Raj, their families and the British Military in Colonial India. The beds were designed to collapse and be transported flat pack so could easily be moved whilst on military exercises and to their summerhouses in the hills. They were made when the Raj was at its height. The size, style and quality of the bed depict the status of the occupier or the military rank of the owner. They were made from the finest wood usually Mahogany, Teak or Sissoo wood (a member of the rose wood family). External Height = 211cm or 83 or 6ft 11. External length = 214.5cm or 84½ or 7ft 0½. External width = 186.5cm or 73½ or 6ft 1½. Headboard height = 101.3cm or 39½ or 3ft 3½. Footboard height = 101.3cm or 39½ or 3ft 3½. Height from floor to top of side rails = 45.1cm or 17¾ or 1ft 5¾. Height from floor to bottom of side rails = 35.5cm or 14 or 1ft 2. Side rail depth = 9.6cm or 3¾. Mattress Dimensions (slats not lowered). Length = 197cm or 77½ or 6ft 5½. Width (slats) = 173.3cm or 68¼ or 5ft 8¼. Width (including side rails) = 181cm or 71¼ or 5ft 11¼. Width = 178.5cm or 70¼ or 5ft 10¼.

It is advised that 1 should be removed from the mattress width dimension if the slats are being lowered. Between 2-3 (in total) should be removed from the above mattress length dimension to allow the mattress to comfortably fit on the bed between the headboard and footboard. Our mattresses are constructed of natural materials (silk, wool & cashmere) and are hand made in the UK.

The mattresses can have the corners removed so to maximise the mattress fit in the super-structure of bed. The price quoted does not include the mattress. Please enquire for a mattress quote. We do offer a separate draping service whereby we can dress the bed with any fabric of choice.

This service can consist of the basic fabric being wrapped around the canopy, to hanging curtains or, providing a dressed solid roof with hung curtains. Apart from the superior style and presence, this four-poster bed had a practical purpose. The bed would have originally been decorated with a light muslin cotton material to prevent the mosquitos from biting the occupants in bed.

The advertised price does not include drapes. This bed is in excellent original condition, which is commensurate with its age. Some nominal old use marks to the leading edges and polish but nothing significant considering the age of the item. This bed has a dark ebony style colour and retains the original polish finish. The bed has an excellent colour; its solid in joint and ready to use.
