The steel tube perfectly corresponded with the contemporary aesthetic of the machine, a manifesto of the design ideal of the 1920s. It was a symbol of technology, industry, production in series, standardization, functionality and hygiene, that were all values and concepts of crucial importance for international modernism. As the story goes, Breuer got his idea from the steel tube on his bicycle, attracted by its light and highly resistant properties; for his experiments with metal furniture, he used earlier aluminium and then polished steel. The armchair was called Wassily because Kandinsky owned the prototype created in 1925, and used it in his house at the Bauhaus campus.
